Officials in a Fort Worth-area school district are investigating after a video of a white student yelling at and hitting a Black teacher went viral.
The video, which was filmed at a school in the Castleberry district, was posted to Twitter on Nov. 19 and has since garnered more than 220,000 views. It’s not clear what date the incident occurred.
The roughly one-minute clip begins with a female student walking up to the front of the room and hitting a button on the teacher’s phone while the educator appears to be making a call.
The teacher removes the student’s hand from the phone, and the girl responds by slapping the educator’s arm.
The teacher is seen shaking her head as she walks around the front of the desk and is heard saying, “You touched me. I did not touch you.” The woman then walks to the door of the classroom.
The student then is seen using the teacher’s desk phone as the educator walks back toward her.
“I’m calling my mama. You ain’t about to [expletive] me up [expletive],” the student says.
The teacher walks back to her desk, and the girl is then heard saying, “You want to talk to her because she’s Black, and she’s [expletive] me off right now” to someone on the other line.
After a few seconds, the girl throws the phone at the teacher and walks out of the classroom.
In a statement posted to Twitter on Monday, the Castleberry school officials said it was “greatly disturbed” by the video and had referred the matter to law enforcement officials. It’s also conducting its own investigation into the incident, the statement noted.
District officials praised the teacher for how she handled the situation.
“We first want to commend the teacher for the calm demeanor and utter professionalism she demonstrated through the entirety of the incident, even when the situation turned violent and offensive,” the statement read. “We support this teacher and her response in the strongest terms possible.”
Brittany Evans, the student’s mother, told WFAA-TV that the incident upset her and that she doesn’t know where her daughter “would learn something like that.”
“I know I don’t throw racial slangs ever,” Evans said. “I know none of my family members that live in the house with me throw racial slangs ever.”
Evans told the station that her daughter is autistic, bi-polar, and battles depression. The mother added that she’s had more than 10 meetings with school officials trying to enroll her into special education courses.
“I wish the school would label her correctly, so we didn’t have to go through this,” Evans told the outlet.
Evans told WFAA that she wanted to apologize to the teacher.
“She is an amazing woman. She is calm, very collected, super sweet,” she said. “She is, in my eyes, a saint, and needs an award.”
Steve Poole, the executive director of the United Educators Association, told WFAA that the girl should face a criminal charge for her actions.
“What that student did is a felony under state law,” he said. “Assaulting a public servant — and a teacher is a public servant — is a felony. And hopefully the student will face appropriate consequences.”
